Remembering Jennifer Dickson (1936-2025)

Jennifer Dickson was always a classy lady. Meticulous and fastidious in life and her artwork. Exhibited internationally and the only Canadian in 1976 to be elected to the Royal Academy of Arts.

Her CV is nothing but impressive and yet she was humble and always gracious. We will fondly remember her.

Remembering Isla Burns (1952-2024)

This past week, the art world has lost another great art legend, Isla Burns.  She was a trail blazer in abstract steel sculpting in Canada. Isla had always a passion for sculpting. She first came to Canada with her mother from the United Kingdom in 1970, where she first studied at the Alberta College of Art (now the Alberta University of the Arts) in 1975.

Remembering Dorothy Knowles

It is with great sadness that we are to share with you that Dorothy Knowles passed away peacefully with her family on Tuesday morning, May 16, 2023, at the age of 96. She will be fondly remembered and missed.A regal and classy woman, Knowles was an artist that stayed true to herself and her calling in landscape painting.

Announcement: Tanabe Price 2023 Winner!  Amy Modahl

Two artists in the B.C.Interior, Amy Modahl and Robin Hodgson, have won this year’s Tanabe Prize.They each receive $15,000. Modahl, who teaches at the Vernon campus of Okanagan College, has had solo exhibitions at the Kamloops Art Gallery and the Kelowna Art Gallery. Emerging artist Robin Hodgson, of Kamloops, a quadriplegic since the age of 19, has partial movement in his arms, allowing him to paint with the assistance of adaptive tools.

Elza Mayhew at the Outdoor Art Collection for UBC

Artworks enter the Outdoor Art Collection through new commissions or donations of already existing artworks.The last project to enter the collection through donation was Hock E Aye Vi Edgar Heap of Bird’s Native Hosts (1991/2007) in 2007.This year, the University Art Committee was pleased to accept the donation of Stela I and Stela II (1963) by Elza Mayhew. Completed in 1963, this pair of abstract, cast aluminum sculptures are excellent examples of Mayhew’s production at a crucial moment in Canadian art history, as well as in her practice.
