Throughout my career, I have been exploring a number of interconnected themes that are visible across my bodies of work. For instance, much of the work explores Nature both as a liminal state as well as a representable and imaginable reality. The traditions of photography and painting both lend themselves naturally to exploring this theme as they rely on light (the sun, the spirit) as both tool and metaphor. The play of light and shadow are necessary not only for creating form, atmosphere, and character, but also for representing what lies beneath: the stories, the feelings, the souls. In my work, gold-leaf and orbs of light simultaneously illuminate the landscape while also representing the supernatural. As I gently scratch away at surfaces, I am allowing light to come through from underneath, as if revealing other worlds.
Everywhere I gaze, Nature reveals. It’s within Nature’s limitless vistas and deep wells of stillness that possibility soars, where we still our own beating hearts long enough to open them to others. Nature teaches us to behold, which is what love is: beholding. These are the places where forgiveness waters the earth, and where love blossoms.
